EAC-PM Recommends Splitting 170 Lok Sabha Seats, Kerala and Tamil Nadu to Gain More Constituencies

The Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) has proposed a major recommendation to restructure and split 170 large Lok Sabha constituencies across India. Under this new proposal, 59 constituencies would be divided into two, while 111 constituencies would be split into three. This recommendation comes at a crucial time as the government initiates discussions to introduce a revised delimitation bill in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament.

The proposal has significant implications for southern states, recommending the division of 22 constituencies across Kerala and Tamil Nadu. If implemented, the number of Lok Sabha seats in Kerala will rise from the current 20 to 30, while Tamil Nadu’s representation will increase to 59 seats. Additionally, Karnataka’s seats would rise to 42, Telangana’s to 26, and Andhra Pradesh’s representation would increase from 25 to 38 seats.

Northern and western states are also projected to see substantial increases in their parliamentary representation under this recommendation. Maharashtra’s seats are proposed to increase from 48 to 72, and Uttar Pradesh could see its tally rise from 80 to 120 seats. Since the previous delimitation bill could not be passed in the last parliamentary session, political analysts expect that key elements of this advisory council recommendation may be incorporated into the upcoming bill to be tabled in Parliament.
