An 80-year-old woman named Thankamma was murdered in Kayamkulam, Kanyakunnu, by her neighbor, Prakashan, who sought to steal her gold jewelry. The victim’s body was discovered by fishermen in the Kayamkulam backwaters, with her hands and feet bound and heavy stones attached to her body to ensure it sank.
According to the police, the accused initially visited the victim’s home to help her move a gas cylinder. He returned later that night during heavy rain, suffocating the woman with a pillow while she was watching television. After stealing her bangles and rings, he disposed of the body in the water. The police identified the culprit after noticing inconsistencies in his statement during the investigation. The accused is currently in custody and will be taken for evidence collection at the jewelry store where he sold the stolen items.
