From November 15, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will enforce stricter toll collection rules on national highways. Vehicles without a Fastag will have to pay double the normal toll fee if paying in cash, while those using digital payments like UPI will pay 1.25 times the standard rate.
The Fastag system has been mandatory for all M and N class vehicles (four-wheelers, passenger and goods vehicles) since January 2021 under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. The new rules aim to reduce waiting time at toll plazas and promote digital payments. Additionally, the ministry introduced a Fastag Annual Pass in August 2024, allowing private vehicle owners to pay Rs 3,000 for unlimited travel on national highways and expressways for one year or 200 crossings, whichever comes first.
