Ginger Side Effects: Who Should Avoid It?

Ginger is widely known for its health benefits, but it can cause bleeding, heart palpitations, and stomach issues in certain individuals. Dr. Sreelakshmi VS explains that ginger contains active compounds like gingerols and shogaol, which provide medicinal properties but can also lead to adverse effects in specific conditions.

People with bleeding disorders, low platelet count, or those on blood thinners like warfarin, heparin, aspirin, and clopidogrel should avoid large amounts of ginger as it can increase bleeding risk. Similarly, individuals scheduled for surgery should stop ginger supplements a few days prior to prevent excessive bleeding. Those with low blood pressure may experience dizziness and weakness, while diabetics on medication might face dangerously low blood sugar levels. Gallstone patients may worsen their condition due to increased bile production, and people with acid reflux or heartburn may find their symptoms aggravated. Pregnant women, especially those with high-risk pregnancies, should consult a doctor before using ginger.

Despite its benefits, ginger is not safe for everyone. Always consult a healthcare professional before using ginger supplements, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are on medication.
