Government Plans to Mandate Isobutanol Blending in Diesel to Curb Pollution

The Central Government is planning to mandate the blending of isobutanol in diesel in an effort to reduce vehicular pollution and enhance fuel security across the country. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Secretary V. Umashankar indicated that this new proposal could be implemented by the end of this year or late 2026. The government is seriously considering this move, which mirrors the successful ethanol blending program in petrol.

To support this transition, the Ministry has commissioned the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) to study the feasibility of flex-fuel engines capable of running on up to 100 percent isobutanol. Additionally, Bharat Petroleum is actively researching the blending process, with initial results showing positive outcomes. Since India’s diesel consumption is double that of petrol, this initiative is expected to play a crucial role in securing the nation’s energy needs.

Isobutanol is a biofuel derived from ethanol, offering higher energy density and a lower risk of corrosion compared to ethanol itself. Tests have shown that vehicles running on isobutanol-blended diesel produce significantly lower emissions without any adverse effects on engine performance or exhaust systems.
