Haripad Newborn Abandonment Case: 19-Year-Old Mother Changes Stand, Demands Baby Back

In a major turn of events in the shocking Haripad newborn abandonment case, the 19-year-old mother has expressed her desire to get her baby back. The young woman, who recently gave birth in a hospital toilet and threw the newborn out of a ventilator window, had initially refused to care for the child. However, she changed her stance after undergoing counseling and when officials from the State Child Welfare Committee arrived to take custody of the baby.

The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairperson, Adv. B. Geetha, stated that the baby will only be returned after receiving a detailed police report and assessing the mother’s mental health. Although a mother has up to six months by law to claim her child, the CWC will prioritize the infant’s safety. Currently, the baby has been moved to the Sishu Vikas Bhavan, an approved adoption center in Mannancherry.

The mother, who faces attempt-to-murder charges, claimed she was unaware of her pregnancy and panicked during the sudden delivery. Meanwhile, the police are searching for the migrant worker from another state with whom she had a relationship while working in Ernakulam. A special investigation team is expected to travel to other states to locate him.
