Journalists Protest Sriram Venkitaraman Presence at Minister Press Conference

High drama unfolded at the Kerala Legislative Assembly’s media room as journalists strongly protested the presence of Sriram Venkitaraman, an accused in the death of journalist K.M. Basheer, at a press conference called by the Agriculture Minister. The journalists refused to participate in the briefing while Venkitaraman, who currently serves as the Director of the Agriculture Department, sat alongside the minister.

As the press conference began, media persons unitedly objected to sitting with the accused in their colleague’s death. Although the minister repeatedly requested to complete the scheduled briefing on environmental programs first, the journalists stood firm, threatening to walk out. Seeing the situation escalate, Sriram Venkitaraman voluntarily left the media room, after which the press conference proceeded.

Sriram Venkitaraman is the prime accused in the high-profile case where journalist K.M. Basheer was killed after being hit by a car. The case has seen massive public outrage and allegations of evidence tampering using official influence. With the final hearing of the case scheduled for this August, his continued presence in key government departments remains a highly sensitive issue for the media fraternity and Basheer’s family.
