Following the BJP’s rise to power in West Bengal, Kalita Majhi, a former domestic worker who earned a meager monthly wage of ₹4,000, has taken oath as a minister in the Suvendu Adhikari cabinet. Contesting from the Ausgram constituency in Purba Bardhaman district, the 37-year-old secured a historic victory by defeating Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Shyamaprasanna Lohar by a margin of over 12,000 votes.
Before her political breakthrough, Majhi worked cleaning houses and washing dishes to support her family, while her husband, Subrata Majhi, worked as a plumber. Having been active in politics for over a decade, she had previously contested the same seat in 2021, finishing second with 88,000 votes. This time, she crossed the milestone of securing over one lakh votes to claim her victory, taking a month’s leave from her domestic work to focus entirely on her campaign.
Expressing her gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for placing faith in her, Majhi stated that her life as a domestic worker helped her deeply understand the struggles of the poor. Her primary goals as minister include improving roads, providing clean drinking water, ensuring women’s safety, and implementing the PM Awas Yojana to build houses and toilets. She also plans to construct a hospital in her region so that local residents do not have to travel all the way to Burdwan city for medical treatment.
