In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through Kannur, an SSB border police officer was found dead by hanging at his home on the morning of his wedding day. The deceased has been identified as Shabeen, son of Bharathan and Seeba, from Mundheri Mavilachal in Kannur.
Shabeen was serving as a border police officer with the SSB in Jammu and Kashmir and had returned home on leave for his wedding. The wedding ceremonies were scheduled to take place on Monday at Makreri Ambalam in Kannur.
As part of the wedding preparations, a grand feast was organised at Shabeen’s home on Sunday night for relatives and friends. All guests had left after midnight. It was around this time that Shabeen received a phone call from his bride-to-be, according to family members. While speaking on the phone, he went into his room and locked the door from inside.
Around 4:45 AM on Monday, when family members came to call him for the wedding photoshoot at Makreri temple, they found the door locked. After repeated attempts to get a response, they broke open the door and discovered Shabeen hanging dead in the bathroom.
The Chakkaraikal police have registered a case and reached the spot to conduct inquest proceedings. The body has been moved to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem. Police have taken Shabeen’s phone into custody and are examining call records and chats with the help of the cyber cell to determine the exact circumstances leading to his death.
The phone call that came late Sunday night is a key focus of the investigation. Police are looking into how long the conversation lasted and what was discussed. They will also record the statement of the bride-to-be. Authorities are also probing whether Shabeen was under any mental stress related to his work or personal life.
Friends and relatives have stated that Shabeen appeared cheerful and happy during the wedding feast on Sunday night, making the sudden turn of events all the more baffling. The post-mortem report is expected to provide further clarity on the time and cause of death.
The untimely demise of the young officer on what was supposed to be his happiest day has plunged his family and the entire Eechoor village into deep grief.
