Fish Prices Soar in Kerala Ahead of Trawling Ban

Fish prices in Kerala have skyrocketed even before the annual trawling ban comes into effect, causing significant distress to consumers and fishermen alike. Popular fish varieties, including sardines and mackerel, have seen steep price increases over the last two weeks due to a severe shortage of catch and rising operational costs.

The price of sardines (matti), which was Rs 200 per kilogram two weeks ago, has now reached Rs 380 per kilogram, despite large-sized sardines returning to the Kerala coast after a gap of 12 years. Similarly, mackerel (ayala) is being sold for up to Rs 380 per kilogram depending on the size, while other fish varieties have registered a price hike of Rs 40 to Rs 50.

Local fishermen are facing a severe financial crisis due to rising kerosene and fuel prices, coupled with climate change and a decline in fish populations. Many report that taking boats out to sea on borrowed funds yields meager returns of just around Rs 300, resulting in heavy losses. Additionally, frequent weather warnings preventing them from venturing into the sea and damage to fishing nets caused by pufferfish and dolphins have further reduced the number of active fishing boats.
