Student enrollment in classes 1 to 7 across government and aided schools in Kerala is projected to decrease by around 75,000 this academic year. This significant drop in student strength raises concerns over a potential division fall, which could lead to the loss of more than 3,000 teaching posts in the state’s public education sector.
The current situation brings back memories of past crises, such as the end of the previous UDF administration when 4,918 teachers lost their posts. Over the last decade, the subsequent LDF governments rehabilitated those affected teachers and strengthened the public education system by recruiting over 37,000 teachers through the PSC, bringing nearly 11 lakh students into public schools.
While teachers are actively organizing welcoming camps to attract new students, the projected decline of 75,000 students remains a major challenge. Stakeholders are closely watching how the government will intervene to protect these teaching positions and prevent job losses, similar to the protective measures implemented in previous years.
