The Union Ministry of Road Transport has rejected the Kerala government’s decision to extend the lifespan of state-owned vehicles from 15 to 20 years. In a letter to the Transport Commissioner, the ministry stated that the state’s amendment is illegal and cannot be upheld under central law.
The decision to extend vehicle life was taken by former minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar during the final phase of the second Pinarayi government. The state had also directed the State Insurance Service to provide insurance for these older vehicles. The center clarified that states do not have the authority to override central regulations on vehicle longevity, and the insurance coverage for such vehicles is unlawful.
