Kerala Health Minister Orders Urgent Probe Into Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Negligence

Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan has ordered an immediate investigation into a shocking incident where maggots were found on a patient’s leg at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Taking suo motu notice of the situation after watching a television news report, the minister directed a specially constituted inquiry committee to submit a detailed report within 48 hours, promising strict action against any negligent staff.

The inquiry committee is headed by the Medical College Vice Principal and includes the heads of the Orthopedics and Surgery departments. Minister Muraleedharan stated that the government will not tolerate lapses in patient care, and even top officials like the superintendent will face action if found responsible. Additionally, healthcare staff who behaved poorly toward patients and their relatives will be sent for mandatory counseling, though the minister urged the public not to unfairly target the cleaning staff who have been working hard to maintain the facility.

Addressing another incident where a patient diagnosed with Wilson’s disease died after falling from a hospital bed, the minister clarified that the exact cause of death will be determined after receiving the post-mortem report. He also noted that a previous report regarding an incident in Pathanamthitta was rejected due to inadequacies, and a new committee has been tasked with submitting a fresh report within a week, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to reforming the state’s healthcare system.
