Kerala High-Speed Rail: Metro Man E Sreedharan Prepares Interim Report

Metro Man E Sreedharan has prepared an interim project report for a high-speed rail corridor between Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, at the behest of Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The report, which proposes an elevated broad-gauge line, will be submitted to the central government next month.

The 465-km corridor, designed for speeds of 180 km/h, would connect three airports and include 20 stations, with travel time from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode estimated at 2.5 hours at a fare of ₹640. The project, estimated to cost ₹54,000 crore, aims to minimize land acquisition by using elevated tracks requiring only 20 meters width, with land returned to owners after construction. Sreedharan has assured completion within five years, and the state government is expected to cooperate given the Centre’s interest and the project’s potential to replace the scrapped Silver Line.
