In Kerala, the ministerial official vehicle fleet includes a car with registration number 13, but most ministers refuse to use it due to superstition. Despite being a government-provided vehicle, the number 13 car remains largely unwanted as many consider it unlucky.
However, some notable politicians have challenged this superstition by voluntarily choosing the 13 number car. MA Baby, when he was Education Minister in the VS Achuthanandan cabinet in 2006, specifically requested the 13 number car and used it for five years without any issues. Dr Thomas Isaac, during his tenure as Finance Minister in the first Pinarayi Vijayan cabinet in 2016, stepped forward to take the vehicle when others hesitated. More recently, P Prasad, the Agriculture Minister in the second Pinarayi government, gladly accepted the 13 number car in 2021 when the original allottee refused it.
P Prasad questioned why superstition persists even in this century, pointing out that if the number 13 could cause disaster, what about people born on the 13th, or newspapers printed on the 13th, or festivals like Onam and Vishu that fall on that date.
