The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning for isolated rain with thunderstorms and strong winds reaching up to 40 km/h in parts of Malappuram district, Kerala, over the next three hours. The alert comes as the southwest monsoon advances towards the state, with an official onset expected by June 3 or 4.
Currently, monsoon clouds have been active over Lakshadweep and parts of south and central Kerala, bringing isolated showers. However, northern districts remain dry with summer-like conditions, as wind patterns have not yet strengthened enough to carry moisture inland. The monsoon is likely to cover more areas within the next five days.
In preparation, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired a high-level meeting to review monsoon readiness. He directed all government departments to complete preparatory activities urgently, including updating lists of vulnerable families in landslide-prone areas, ensuring proper drainage in urban zones, and setting up systems for timely dissemination of emergency warnings. Special attention was ordered for the safety of elderly, disabled, children, and migrant workers.
