A major controversy has erupted in Kerala revealing how a senior police officer allegedly attempted to manipulate a case diary to shield former Chief Minister’s security personnel involved in an assault on Youth Congress workers. The special investigation team findings have sent shockwaves through the state’s political and police establishments.
The incident dates back to the Navakerala Yatra when gunmen attached to the then Chief Minister brutally attacked Youth Congress workers. The assault happened right in front of local police who had already brought the protesters under control. Despite no law and order threat or attack on the CM, the security detail jumped out of the CM’s convoy vehicle and used batons and sticks to assault the youngsters, causing severe head injuries.
ADGP M R Ajith Kumar allegedly summoned the investigating Alappuzha DYSP to his office on multiple occasions in an attempt to alter the case diary and delete the findings. The special investigation team confirmed that the weapons used by the security personnel were not official police-issued batons but deadly weapons carried personally.
Four police officers, including the former CM’s gunmen, have been found guilty of serious regulatory violations. The investigation also revealed that a previous report submitted by the Alappuzha SB unit was completely suppressed by the then Home Department. Even the then DGP had forwarded that report to the Home Department, but it was buried to protect the CM and his team.
VD Satheeshan, who was then the opposition leader and is now the Chief Minister, played a crucial role in exposing the cover-up through his persistent questioning and political interventions, ultimately forcing the police establishment to face accountability.
