The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five districts in Kerala for tomorrow, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. The affected districts are Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. An orange alert has been declared for six other districts: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad, while a yellow alert is in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha.
Heavy rain and strong winds have already caused damage in several parts of the state. In Kozhikode, a strong wind blew off the roofs of several shops on SM Street, with one large sheet falling near a temple. A shopkeeper narrowly escaped injury. In Kottayam, a house collapsed due to heavy rain, injuring a family of four. The state government has opened 24-hour control rooms, and people can seek help by calling 1070 or 1077.
The IMD has warned that the southwest monsoon is likely to intensify further, with extremely heavy rain expected in northern Kerala on the day after tomorrow as well. Strong winds with speeds of 40-50 km/h are also likely. The fishing ban along the Kerala coast remains in effect until June 8.
