Two 13-Year-Old Girls Die of Snakebites in Kerala: Crucial Safety Precautions Explained

Two 13-year-old girls have tragically lost their lives due to snakebites in separate incidents in Kerala. Niya Lenin, an eighth-grade student from Aroor, and Rajeshwari, a seventh-grade student from Palakkad, passed away after undergoing treatment for several days. These tragic incidents have once again highlighted the critical need for public awareness and vigilance regarding snakebites, especially with the onset of the monsoon season.

Niya was bitten on May 7 near Aroor church while walking to dance practice. Mistaking the bite for an ant bite, she returned home but collapsed an hour later, eventually succumbing to the venom after 24 days in the ICU at a private hospital. In Palakkad, Rajeshwari was bitten by a cobra inside her home while playing. She was found unconscious by her relatives and later passed away at the Thrissur Medical College Hospital after two weeks of treatment.

Experts and snake catchers, including Vava Suresh, urge the public to keep their home surroundings clean and to check footwear and vehicles before use. In case of a snakebite, victims should seek immediate medical attention instead of wasting time trying to catch the snake. Keeping the bitten area below heart level, staying calm to prevent rapid venom spread, and avoiding tight tourniquets that block blood circulation are vital first-aid measures.
