A massive police raid at the famous Surendranath College in Kolkata, West Bengal, has uncovered nearly Rs 1 crore in termite-infested cash, lethal weapons, alcohol bottles, and contraceptives from a locked student union room. The shocking discovery was made when college authorities and cleaning staff opened the room, which had been locked for about a year following a High Court order, to clean it.
Inside the room, police found bundles of Rs 100 and Rs 500 notes stored in two large boxes inside an old cupboard, most of which were severely damaged by termites. Additionally, officers recovered a revolver wrapped in a plastic bag, sharp weapons, and numerous condom packets. The union room was reportedly equipped with luxury amenities, including an air conditioner, an attached bathroom, and expensive beds, raising allegations that it was used as a recreational hub for ruling party goons.
The room was allegedly under the control of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress. Opposition parties have alleged that the recovered cash is the product of admission scams, where seats were sold for hefty bribes, and extortion from local merchants. Following the massive controversy, the West Bengal government has urgently banned the collection of union fees in all aided colleges and universities across the state, while demands for statewide campus raids intensify.
