A major medical negligence allegation has emerged from Kozhikode Medical College Hospital following the death of a patient who was reportedly operated on the wrong side for kidney stones. The deceased, identified as Rejith, a resident of Vanimel in Nadapuram, passed away on Wednesday morning after suffering severe post-surgery complications and infections that allegedly spread to his internal organs.
According to Rejith’s family, he was admitted on August 6 for surgery to remove a stone in his left kidney. However, the doctors allegedly performed the surgery on the right side instead. Following the procedure, Rejith experienced severe pain and pus accumulation, which hospital staff dismissed as normal. Later in April, a second surgery was performed on his left side, reportedly without the family’s consent, which further worsened his condition.
The family also alleged that they had to pay a bribe of ₹5,000 to the then Head of Urology, Dr. Venugopal, at his residence to secure proper medical attention. After Rejith’s condition became critical, he was put on ventilator support but ultimately passed away. The family is currently protesting at the hospital and refusing to accept the body from the mortuary until the District Medical Officer (DMO) intervenes. Meanwhile, the Medical College Superintendent has demanded an official report from the Chief of Urology regarding the incident.
