KSEB Cuts Down Young Coconut Trees in Pathanamthitta Courtyard Without Prior Notice

In a highly controversial move, officials from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) have cut down seven young coconut trees in the courtyard of an unoccupied house in Kaviyoor, Pathanamthitta. The property belongs to Dr. Jacob Oommen, an NRI residing abroad, who alleged that the trees were destroyed without any prior warning or notice to either him or his caretaker.

The incident occurred under the Thottabhagom KSEB section, where officials reportedly used a JCB from outside the compound wall to chop down the trees while the caretaker was away for lunch. The dwarf-variety coconut trees, purchased in 2019, were carefully nurtured for four years and were expected to yield fruit this year. When questioned over the phone, the officials claimed they were acting under the District Collector’s orders to clear branches near power lines.

Dr. Jacob Oommen stated that the trees were planted with adequate clearance from both the boundary wall and the power lines, posing no threat to the electricity supply. Deeply distressed by the unauthorized destruction of their carefully maintained trees, the family has announced their decision to pursue legal action against the KSEB officials involved.
