The Kerala government is considering implementing free travel for women on KSRTC buses, but the facility may initially be limited to ordinary buses only. Out of 4,625 KSRTC buses in the state, around 2,500 are ordinary services, primarily operating in rural areas and smaller city routes.
The government is planning to launch the scheme without any income criteria, making it available to all women equally. As a first phase, the focus is on ordinary buses, which form the majority of the fleet and serve the widest cross-section of passengers. Women currently make up about 50% of the daily ridership of approximately 1.23 lakh passengers.
A gender-based ticketing system has already been introduced to collect accurate data on female ridership. The Chief Minister recently met with the KSRTC Managing Director and has requested a detailed report on the proposal. The government aims to roll out the service by June 15, though the final decision will depend on the data collected and the report submitted.
