Kerala Cabinet to Decide on KSRTC Free Travel Scheme for Women Amid Financial Challenges

The Kerala state cabinet is set to meet today to take a decisive call on implementing the UDF government’s “Indira Guarantee” scheme, which promises free KSRTC bus travel for women starting June 15. With only ten days remaining for the scheduled launch, the government faces significant challenges in executing this major election promise that heavily influenced women voters.

Initially, the plan is aimed at ordinary and fast passenger services, which requires an estimated budget of 90 crore rupees. Today’s cabinet meeting will discuss how to source these funds, alongside reviewing the highly anticipated white paper on the state’s financial situation prepared by a committee led by K.M. Chandrasekhar, which is also scheduled to be tabled in the assembly today.

In other major developments, the cabinet is expected to decide on handing over the investigation into Naveen Babu’s death to the CBI. Meanwhile, the Motor Vehicles Department has dismissed rumors regarding a ban on carrying school children in autorickshaws, clarifying that operations can continue under existing safety guidelines and passenger capacity limits.
