Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V V Rajesh has launched a new initiative called ‘Mayor Care’ to distribute school kits to underprivileged students, without using any corporation funds. The project relies entirely on donations from individuals and organizations, including a contribution from a person based in Tanzania who donated 300 kits worth ₹3 lakh.
The education department has identified 50 students from each of the 101 wards in the city, totaling over 5,000 beneficiaries. The school kits include books, pens, pencils, steel water bottles, umbrellas, and for lower primary students, tiffin boxes and instrument boxes. The kits are being assembled at the corporation premises and will be distributed by ward councilors.
Mayor Rajesh said the initiative aims to support needy families as schools reopen. He added that several donors, including banks under their CSR programs and the Police Cooperative Society, have come forward to contribute. The mayor emphasized that no corporation funds are being used, and the project will continue throughout the year with similar assistance for other needs.
