Middle East War Tensions: Flights Cancelled and Airspace Closed Following Iranian Missile Strikes

Air travel across the Gulf region has ground to a complete halt following a series of missile strikes launched by Iran, triggering widespread fears of a full-scale war in the Middle East. Major Gulf nations, including Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, have temporarily suspended flight operations and closed their airspaces as a security precaution, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

The sudden suspension has severely impacted flight services from Kerala, India. An Air India Express flight bound for Bahrain with 122 passengers from Kochi’s Nedumbassery International Airport was cancelled at the last minute, with no clarity on when services will resume. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Kuwait International Airport’s passenger terminal sustained significant damage from the missile strikes, prompting the Kuwait Directorate General of Civil Aviation to completely shut down its airspace. Major regional carriers like Emirates, Flydubai, Air Arabia, and Kuwait Airways have urged passengers to avoid traveling to airports and to rely solely on official channels for schedule updates.

The escalation began after Tehran accused the United States of violating a ceasefire agreement by targeting an Iranian oil tanker, leading to retaliatory Iranian strikes on US military bases in the region. Air raid sirens have been activated across several Arab nations, including Bahrain, as defense systems are put on high alert. This sudden crisis in the Persian Gulf, one of the world’s busiest aviation corridors, has caused immense anxiety among expatriates and thrown global aviation into uncertainty.
