Mullaperiyar Water Level Rising: TVK Demands Release of Excess Water

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which recently came to power in Tamil Nadu, has renewed demands regarding the Mullaperiyar Dam. Party MLA Jagannatha Mishra from Cumbum has called for the release of excess water from the dam, claiming that the surplus water currently flows into the Idukki reservoir and eventually into the Arabian Sea, wasting a valuable resource.

Mishra clarified that the demand does not involve increasing the dam’s storage capacity. He emphasized that any solution should not cause hardship to the people of either Kerala or Tamil Nadu. The MLA also urged that the Mullaperiyar issue should not be politicized, noting that the Congress government in Kerala and the TVK government in Tamil Nadu share a good relationship.

During the election campaign, TVK had promised to raise the Mullaperiyar water level to 152 feet and to open the Mangaladevi temple on the border. These promises helped TVK win two of the four assembly seats in Theni district, where farmers heavily depend on the dam’s water. The party assured farmer organizations that resolving the Mullaperiyar issue would be a priority.
