Muralidharan Takes Charge: Veena George to Face the Truth

K. Muralidharan has officially taken charge as Kerala’s Health Minister, taking over from Veena George. The change in leadership comes after widespread criticism of the previous administration’s handling of the health sector.

Veena George, who served as Health Minister under the previous Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government, has been accused of being one of the most incompetent ministers in the cabinet. Critics point to the worsening condition of Kerala’s public healthcare system during her tenure — patients suffering without essential medicines, hospital infrastructure failures, and even deaths due to neglect.

One of the most glaring examples was the collapse of a hospital building that resulted in fatalities. There were also cases of unnecessary amputations and patients dying due to lack of timely treatment. The situation deteriorated to such an extent that even the Chief Minister himself sought medical treatment abroad, undermining confidence in Kerala’s own health system.

The UDF government now faces the daunting task of restoring the health sector. Congress leadership insisted that the portfolio be placed in capable hands, which is why K. Muralidharan was chosen. Known for his integrity and administrative competence, Muralidharan is considered well-qualified to steer the department back on course.

As the son of legendary Congress leader K. Karunakaran, Muralidharan needs no instruction in governance. His approach is expected to be thorough and transparent.

Former Health Minister Veena George, however, appears unsettled by the transition. Accusations have emerged that during her tenure, the health department was effectively run from the CPM party office rather than from the minister’s chamber. Party directives were followed without question, and the minister served primarily as a rubber stamp for decisions made elsewhere.

Officers lost morale when they realized that party leadership, not the minister, made all key decisions. This led to administrative paralysis and widespread irregularities.

Muralidharan has signaled a clean-up drive. He intends to investigate whether private hospital lobbies had undue influence over the previous administration. Hospitals that lacked medicines and surgical equipment while being promoted as world-class healthcare centers will face scrutiny.

The new minister is also determined to find out who benefited from the erosion of trust in government hospitals. Questions are being raised about why patients were systematically pushed away from public healthcare facilities.

Muralidharan is unlikely to retreat until every irregularity is brought to light. It is expected that the series of revelations will eventually corner Veena George. Reports suggest that she and her husband had approached party leadership requesting not to be given a ticket in the upcoming elections, fearing the consequences of the impending investigations. However, the party did not oblige.

With Muralidharan now at the helm, Kerala’s health sector is poised for a major cleanup. The coming months will reveal the full extent of the rot and those responsible for it.
