The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has submitted a proposal to allow 18 types of minor vehicle modifications, offering a major relief to vehicle enthusiasts in the state. The recommendations, which include permission for adding stickers and extra lights, are part of a study report prepared by the Transport Commissioner. The state government will make a final decision after thoroughly reviewing this report.
According to the proposal, vehicle owners may be allowed to install extra speakers and make minor cosmetic changes. However, strict regulations, such as decibel limits on sound systems, are expected to remain in place to prevent public disturbance. For major alterations like changing the vehicle’s color, owners must continue to pay the prescribed fees and obtain special permission from the department, as per the existing rules.
It is important to note that these recommendations do not permit extreme structural modifications. Common passenger cars cannot be legally modified into sports cars, as safety remains a priority for the department. The proposed relaxations are currently awaiting final ratification and approval from the state government before they can be officially implemented.
