A woman in Pathanamthitta has alleged medical negligence after a needle broke inside her body during an injection at the Kozhencherry District Hospital and remained lodged for a year.
Valsala, the complainant, had sought treatment for fever at the hospital about a year ago and was administered an injection during her stay. Shortly after, she began experiencing discomfort, describing it as a sensation like an ant bite. She dismissed it, believing it was a reaction to the medication.
Six days ago, the pain became unbearable. When she returned to the same hospital, an X-ray revealed a needle lodged inside her body. A portion of the needle was surgically removed, but another part remains embedded, causing severe pain whenever she moves.
Hospital authorities have confirmed that the removed piece is from an injection needle. Health Minister K. Muralidharan has ordered an investigation and sought a report from the District Medical Officer.
The incident has reignited concerns over medical negligence in government hospitals, with opposition leaders criticizing the government’s track record on healthcare accountability.
