A special police report submitted to the Kerala government has revealed serious security lapses and the theft of gold and other valuable items from the highly secured Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The report highlights the disappearance of 78 grams of gold bars and coins offered by devotees, raising major concerns among the public and devotees about the safety of the temple’s immense wealth.
According to the report submitted by S. Sreejith IPS on behalf of the State Police Chief, several valuable items taken out of the temple for maintenance have not been returned. Notably, a precious diamond (“Vairanamam”) from the sanctum sanctorum has been missing for the past six months, and a gold lamp was replaced with a silver lamp without any official documentation. The report also alleges that individuals associated with the royal family have been bypassing security checks with the assistance of temple staff and security personnel.
Despite stringent security measures, including identity verification and body scans, these lapses have sparked intense criticism. Demands are growing for a comprehensive audit of the temple’s assets and a complete overhaul of its security systems as police continue their investigation, including analyzing CCTV footage.
