The co-owner and trainer of a newly renovated gym in Pudunagaram, Palakkad, has clarified his stance following widespread controversy over advertising the facility as “Islam-friendly.” Nawas, a resident of Thanneerpanthal, stated that the initiative was never intended to foster communal division or exclude people of other faiths, asserting that the gym is open to everyone regardless of their religion.
According to Nawas, the term “Islam-friendly” was used to assure the local majority Muslim population of a comfortable workout environment. The gym offers separate timings for men and women to accommodate conservative families who prefer non-mixed workout sessions. Additionally, instead of playing loud music over speakers, members are encouraged to use headphones, and women are welcome to exercise in attire that aligns with their religious beliefs.
The controversy erupted after a promotional video on Instagram went viral, leading to intense criticism on social media and discussions in national media. Although the video was subsequently deleted, Nawas stands by his explanation, comparing the term to “eco-friendly” as something that is simply non-disruptive to religious sentiments. Local police have reportedly initiated an inquiry into the promotional campaign to understand the situation.
