CCTV Footage Shows Woman Buying Fuel Before Perambra Car Fire

New CCTV footage has emerged in the Perambra car fire case, showing a woman purchasing fuel in a can from a petrol pump. Police suspect the woman in the footage is Sona, the seven-month-pregnant woman who died in the suspicious car fire. The visuals provide further evidence that the incident was pre-planned.

The CCTV footage was recovered from a petrol pump near the couple’s home. It shows a woman filling a can with petrol and paying at the counter. Police are analyzing the footage to confirm whether the woman is indeed Sona, who sustained fatal burns in the incident on the same day.

Sona died after the car caught fire on Kakkaramukku road in Perambra, Kozhikode. Her husband Rajin Lal, who suffered over 60 percent burns, is undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Police had been investigating Sona’s movements on the day of the incident, as she had been at a relative’s house earlier.

The Motor Vehicles Department inspection had already confirmed that the fire did not start from the engine compartment, ruling out a short circuit as the cause. There were no wiring defects or fuel leaks found in the vehicle. The fire appears to have spread from inside the car, suggesting petrol was present in the passenger compartment.

Rajin Lal’s statement to police reveals that he smelled petrol inside the car moments before the fire broke out. He claimed that when he asked about the smell, the fire had already started. Sona was seated in the back seat, and the rear door was found locked during the fire, making rescue efforts difficult.

The couple had a troubled relationship, having faced opposition from both families before their registered marriage in 2023. Sona had previously attempted suicide at Vadakara railway station after discovering Rajin Lal’s involvement with another woman. Police are conducting a detailed investigation into all aspects of the case, including the newly surfaced CCTV evidence.
