Pregnant Woman Dies in Car Fire, Husband Succumbs to Burns Days Later - Perambra Tragedy

The tragic car fire incident in Perambra, Kozhikode has claimed a second life. Rajinlal, who was undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital with 65 percent burns after his car caught fire, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday evening. His pregnant wife Sona had died at the scene when the fire broke out on the night of May 16.

According to police investigation, Sona had purchased petrol in a can from a fuel pump shortly before the incident, and CCTV footage confirmed her identity. Forensic examination revealed that the fire originated from the rear seat of the car, with no signs of fire near the engine or fuel tank, raising suspicions. Police have concluded that Sona intentionally set the car on fire.

The couple had a troubled relationship spanning several years. They met during their Plus Two studies and had a love affair despite family opposition. At one point, Rajinlal attempted to marry another woman, which led Sona to attempt suicide at Vadakara railway station, where railway police intervened. After Sonal took legal action, Rajinlal married her. However, post-marriage, problems continued. Sona’s family alleges that she was often left hungry at her husband’s home, and that Rajinlal suspected her fidelity, demanding a DNA test after childbirth. They also claim Rajinlal had an extramarital relationship.

Rajinlal’s father Rajan has denied all allegations, stating the couple was happy for three years and questioning why Sona’s family never visited her during that time if they were concerned. With Rajinlal’s death, the mystery of what exactly transpired between the couple on that fateful day may never be fully known.
