Private bus operators in Kerala have warned that the government’s proposed free travel scheme for women on KSRTC buses will force them to shut down within three months. The Private Bus Operators Federation stated that 60% of their passengers are women, and once free travel is introduced on KSRTC, private buses will lose most of their ridership.
According to the federation, the number of private buses has already dropped from 35,000 to 8,000 due to operational difficulties. They argue that the government should not implement free travel at the expense of destroying the private transport sector, which employs thousands of workers and contributes significantly to the state exchequer through taxes.
