A massive protest and sit-in near the residence of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan turned violent as police arrested over 57 DYFI activists, including state president Vaseef, and registered cases under unlawful assembly and obstruction of public way. The protest was against the alleged corruption involving Vijayan’s daughter Veena Vijayan in the CMRL monthly salary scam, which is under ED investigation.
The ED has frozen 242 bank accounts totaling approximately ₹18.36 crore and seized over 200 crucial documents during raids. Veena Vijayan’s three accounts are among those frozen. The ED directorate has instructed the Kochi zonal office to expedite the investigation without political interference, with plans to issue summons within two days after scientific examination of seized phones and documents.
Critics argue that while party leaders and their families amass wealth, ordinary workers face police batons and court appearances. The protest, originally targeting Pinarayi Vijayan’s house, saw leaders like former minister Muhammad Riyaas emerge only after the situation calmed, leaving the arrested activists to face legal battles alone.
