VD Satheesan Keeps His Word on Key UDF Promises

Newly sworn-in Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan convened his first cabinet meeting shortly after taking office. In the press conference that followed, he declared that the UDF is fulfilling the promises made in its election manifesto.

Among the key announcements, free travel for women on KSRTC buses will be introduced from June 15. This was one of the UDF’s major electoral commitments. Satheesan also announced the creation of a dedicated department for senior citizens, the first of its kind in the country, and a hike in the honorarium of ASHA workers to ₹3,000.

While these announcements signal a government intent on delivering on its promises, the free travel scheme raises several practical questions. Will women be allowed free travel on all types of KSRTC services including ordinary, fast passenger, superfast, and luxury buses? Can a woman travel across the state from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod entirely for free? Is there an age limit for beneficiaries? How many free trips can a single person take in a day? Are government employees who already have a steady income also eligible? Will women from other states visiting Kerala be covered? And does the scheme apply only within Kerala’s borders or also on inter-state KSRTC services?

These are complex questions that the government will need to address as it moves to implement the scheme. Nevertheless, the new chief minister’s first press conference has made one thing clear: VD Satheesan is keeping his word.
