Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi has sparked significant political discussion. The meeting, which also included Home Minister Amit Shah and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, was described as warm and productive by Delhi sources. Satheesan presented Kerala’s needs, focusing on financial constraints and development projects, particularly in the maritime sector.
Satheesan, known for his strong opposition to Modi and the Sangh Parivar, surprised many by adopting a cooperative stance. He emphasized that the state’s growth requires collaboration with the central government, setting aside political differences. The Chief Minister outlined a vision for Kerala’s maritime economy, including the development of ports like Vizhinjam and a proposed new port in Ponnani with Adani Group’s support.
Modi reportedly responded positively, especially to Satheesan’s focus on national security and economic growth through maritime infrastructure. The Prime Minister assured sympathetic consideration of Kerala’s request to exclude land acquisition costs for national highways from the state’s borrowing limit. This meeting signals a potential shift in Kerala’s relationship with the central government, with both leaders committed to working together for the state’s development.
