Islamic scholars emphasize the importance of taking immediate, specific steps when a person passes away at home. While there are four primary obligatory duties for a deceased person—including bathing, shrouding, funeral prayer, and burial—there are seven practical and sunnah actions that family members should perform immediately upon confirming death.
The first step is to gently close the eyes of the deceased to prevent insects from entering and to ease the sight for onlookers. This is followed by tying the jaw with a clean cloth to keep the mouth closed before rigor mortis sets in, and placing a light object on the stomach to prevent bloating. Family members should also remove any tight clothing or jewelry, cover the body entirely with a simple sheet, and position the body facing the Qiblah.
Crucially, the final immediate action is to resolve any outstanding debts of the deceased as quickly as possible. Highlighting the gravity of unpaid debts, Islamic teachings recall that Prophet Muhammad once refrained from performing the funeral prayer for a debtor until a companion stepped forward to guarantee the debt, emphasizing that families must prioritize settling these financial obligations.
