The Thiruvananthapuram Judicial First Class Magistrate Court has rejected the bail application of SFI District President Vijay Vimal, who was arrested for allegedly attacking police officers and obstructing Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials during a recent protest. The court observed that granting bail at this preliminary stage for such serious offenses would send a wrong message to society and potentially encourage other students to engage in similar unlawful activities.
The case arises from an incident where CPM and SFI workers blocked and attacked ED officials and damaged their vehicles following a raid at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s residence. The ED raid was part of an ongoing investigation into the financial transactions of Exalogic, a Bengaluru-based company owned by the Chief Minister’s daughter, Veena Vijayan, regarding a Rs 1.72 crore deal with CMRL. While the prosecution argued that the accused created a terror-like atmosphere and damaged public property, the defense claimed that the arrest procedures were violated and the vehicle involved was private.
Currently, around 25 party workers, including a senior ward councillor, remain in custody after their bail pleas were rejected. The incident has triggered intense political discussion, with critics pointing out that while grassroots workers are facing severe legal consequences and jail time, senior party leaders have distanced themselves from the violence, leaving the families of the arrested workers to deal with the legal fallout alone.
