SFI District President Vijay Vimal Denied Bail in ED Attack Case

The Thiruvananthapuram Judicial First Class Magistrate Court has rejected the bail application of SFI District President Vijay Vimal, who is the 26th accused in the case involving the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. Vijay Vimal, who is also an Anjengo Grama Panchayat member and former Kerala University Union Chairman, was arrested by the City Shadow Police during an early morning raid at his residence.

The court observed that the attack on central agency officials is a grave offense and equivalent to an assault on the nation itself. Refusing bail, the court noted that the accused have criminal backgrounds and that granting them bail would send a wrong message to society. The prosecution highlighted that during the protest, SFI and DYFI workers pelted stones at a police officer trying to clear the crowd, which narrowly missed causing him to lose his eyesight.

Currently, 26 individuals remain in jail without bail in connection with the incident, where a case has been registered against around 300 identifiable persons. While SFI leadership protested the arrests, claiming it was an attempt to disrupt the academic year of student leaders, critics point out that senior party leaders who incited the violence have abandoned the junior workers to face the legal consequences alone.
