How Somavara Vratam and Shiva Puja Can Strengthen Marital Bonds

Observing Somavara Vratam (Monday fasting) and performing dedicated Shiva Puja is a powerful traditional practice to resolve marital conflicts and strengthen the bond between husband and wife. While many associate this fast solely with marriage prospects, ancient scriptures highlight its efficacy in bringing harmony, peace, and longevity to existing marital relationships, helping couples overcome astrological mismatches and domestic disputes.

To observe this fast correctly, devotees must wake up early, bathe, apply sacred ash (bhasmam), wear white clothing, and visit a Shiva temple. One must maintain a complete fast throughout the day, chanting the Panchakshari mantra and keeping the mind focused on Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. For those who must work during the day, avoiding unnecessary conversations and silently meditating on the divine couple is highly recommended. Visiting a temple where Shiva and Parvati are consecrated together adds special significance to the prayers.

In the evening, devotees should visit the Shiva temple once again, offer dakshina (alms) to the priest, and break their fast by consuming the sacred tender coconut water offered at the shrine. Worshipping the entire Shiva family—comprising Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya—is believed to bring immense peace to the household. Furthermore, when a Monday coincides with a new moon day (Amavasya), it is known as Amosomavaram, an exceptionally auspicious day where fasting can yield blessings equivalent to a whole year of regular fasting, effectively resolving deep-seated marital issues.
