The Divine Friendship of Lord Krishna and Sudama

The timeless tale of Lord Krishna and his childhood friend Sudama, also known as Kujela, highlights the profound nature of true devotion and divine grace. Living in extreme poverty with his family, Sudama was persuaded by his wife to visit Krishna in the prosperous city of Dwarka, not to beg for wealth, but to reunite with his beloved friend. Armed only with a humble offering of flattened rice borrowed from neighbors and tied in a torn cloth, Sudama set off on a journey that would transform his life forever.

Upon his arrival in Dwarka, Sudama was warmly received by Lord Krishna, who ran to embrace his old friend with tears of joy. In a display of deep respect, Krishna washed Sudama’s feet with holy water and seated him on his own bed, surprising the royal household. Despite the grand setting, Sudama felt embarrassed to present his meager gift of flattened rice and tried to hide it. However, the omniscient Lord Krishna playfully snatched the bundle and eagerly ate a handful, declaring it the most delicious food he had tasted since leaving Gokulam.

As Krishna prepared to take a second handful, Goddess Lakshmi intervened, realizing that a single handful had already bestowed Sudama with immense wealth equivalent to that of Lord Indra. Sudama departed the next day without asking for any material help and believing he had received nothing. However, upon returning to his village, he was astonished to find his dilapidated hut replaced by a magnificent palace and his wife adorned in splendor like Goddess Lakshmi. Recognizing this as Krishna’s boundless grace, Sudama and his family continued to live a life of selfless devotion, free from worldly attachments.
