A 24-year-old woman, Fathima Sufaida from Cherladukka in Kasargod, ended her life by consuming acid after enduring months of domestic abuse from her husband. The tragic incident occurred just before her first wedding anniversary, which was due on May 25.
On the evening of the incident, Sufaida’s parents arrived at her husband Aadil’s home in Panalath to mediate a dispute between the couple. Their plan was to take their daughter home temporarily to cool things down. However, as Sufaida attempted to leave with her parents, her husband threatened her, saying, “If you leave now, do not come back.”
Moments later, Sufaida consumed acid that was stored in the house. Even as she writhed in pain, her husband and his family allegedly refused to take her to the hospital. According to Sufaida’s family, they said, “You will suffer for this,” and stood by without helping. She was eventually taken to a hospital, but it was too late.
Sufaida’s family revealed that the abuse had been ongoing since shortly after the wedding. Her husband would brutally beat her and even smashed her phone to prevent her from reporting the abuse. The family also alleged that there was harassment over gold jewelry and the wedding necklace (mahar) she had received.
The couple had a two-month-old baby. Police have arrested the husband, Aadil, in connection with the incident.
