Kerala Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph has appointed his brother-in-law, Benny Thomas, to his personal staff as an Additional Private Secretary. The appointment came to light following the release of the official list of the minister’s 13-member personal staff. Benny Thomas is the husband of the minister’s sister.

The opposition LDF has strongly protested against the appointment, raising allegations of nepotism. Benny Thomas, a resident of Ulikkal in Kannur, is a prominent Congress leader and currently serves as the Kannur DCC General Secretary.

Defending the move, Congress leadership stated that both Sunny Joseph and Benny Thomas were active party workers long before they became relatives. Benny has a long history of public service, having served as the Ulikkal Panchayat President and the Ulikkal Co-operative Bank Secretary. He has been working closely with Sunny Joseph since the latter became an MLA and is a key organizer of Congress activities in Peravoor.
