Caretaker Arrested for Abusing Elderly Women at Thenmala Shelter Home

The Thenmala police have arrested the caretaker of “Punarjani,” a private shelter home for the elderly near Thenmala Grama Panchayat in Kollam district, following shocking allegations of physical, mental, and sexual abuse against elderly female residents. The horrific ordeal came to light after two elderly women, aged over 70, managed to escape from the facility and were rescued by a local resident on the roadside.

According to the local woman who rescued them, the elderly victims were found walking in a highly traumatized state, crying and pleading for help. They revealed that the caretaker subjected them to severe torture, including stripping them naked, forcing alcohol into their mouths, and threatening them with surveillance cameras. The victims escaped when the caretaker went to Punalur and the facility’s door was temporarily left unlocked while a helper was bathing another resident.

Upon hearing their harrowing experience, the local resident took the women to her house, provided them with food and water, and contacted local representatives and social workers. The Thenmala police subsequently registered a case and arrested the accused caretaker. Following the incident, all the elderly residents of the shelter have been safely relocated to Gandhibhavan, where they are now receiving proper care and protection.
