The Thiruvananthapuram Mayor has strongly refuted media reports claiming that the city corporation blocked a public road for an official event. Clarifying the situation, the Mayor stated that the event in question was not an official Corporation program, and the local body had neither discussed, funded, nor authorized any such road closure.
Addressing the media, the Mayor explained that the road block occurred on a Public Works Department (PWD) road. Under the Municipal Act, the municipal corporation has no legal jurisdiction to intervene or grant permissions on PWD roads, as such matters fall strictly under the authority of the PWD and the police. The Mayor pointed out that the Corporation only holds authority over its own designated venues, such as Manaveeyam Veedhi, Poojappura Ground, Gandhi Park, and Putharikandam Ground, where strict guidelines are always maintained to ensure traffic is never disrupted.
Regarding her name and photo appearing on the event’s promotional materials, she clarified that public representatives’ images are often used by various independent organizers without prior official consent. She added that she had only committed to attending two specific events on that day—a tree plantation at Sreekanteswaram Park and a school program—and urged the media to verify facts with Corporation officials before publishing misleading reports.
