Three MLAs from Tamil Nadu’s opposition AIADMK (Palaniswami faction) have resigned and joined the ruling TVK party led by Chief Minister Vijay. The resignations reduce the opposition’s strength in the assembly and mark a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
The resigning MLAs are S. Jayakumar from Perundurai (Erode district), Maragatham Kumaravel from Madurandagam (Chengalpattu district), and P. Sathyabama from Dharapuram (Tiruppur district). After resigning, they met TVK leader and minister Aadhav Arjuna and confirmed their entry into the party. With these resignations, the AIADMK’s strength in the assembly has dropped to 44, while the rebel faction led by SP Velumani now has 17 MLAs and the EPS faction has 27. By-elections will be held in the three vacant constituencies, along with the upcoming by-election in Tiruchirappalli East, which fell vacant after Vijay’s election. TVK is reportedly working to attract more MLAs, though party leaders deny any horse-trading, attributing the moves to the “Vijay wave” in Tamil Nadu.
