Kerala is exploring a new high-speed rail project that could cut travel time from Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur to just 3.5 hours, reviving hopes for rapid transit after the Silver Line project was abandoned. The proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, would use elevated concrete pillars and tunnels, minimizing land acquisition and environmental impact.
Unlike the scrapped Silver Line, which faced fierce opposition over land acquisition and ecological concerns, the RRTS is designed to run on elevated corridors, reducing disruption. E. Sreedharan, the former Delhi Metro chief known as ‘Metro Man’, is conducting a feasibility study for this corridor. The project aims to connect major cities at speeds over 160 km/h, similar to the successful Delhi-Meerut RRTS.
Kerala’s new government, led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, has signaled support for scientifically planned rapid transit. The state hopes that with central cooperation, the RRTS can become a reality, boosting economic productivity and attracting investment. Delays have already escalated costs, making timely decisions crucial.
