Trivandrum Mayor VV Rajesh has ordered the demolition of illegal constructions at Palayam Market, sending a strong message against encroachments in the city. The Corporation’s special squad carried out the demolition on Sunday, targeting unauthorized buildings that had been blocking access to Smart City project structures.
The illegal constructions had created severe ventilation issues in the market area, making it difficult for traders to operate. Many of the unauthorized buildings were being rented out at exorbitant rates of up to 3000 rupees per day, with the transactions conducted under benami names. The Corporation also uncovered widespread illegal money collection from traders, a practice that had been ongoing for 45 years with the alleged connivance of previous administrative committees.
Mayor Rajesh stated that there will be no compromise with illegal constructions and warned that if the encroachers do not remove the structures themselves, the Corporation will take direct action. He inspected the market along with officials and confirmed that records were checked before proceeding with the demolition.
The Mayor also highlighted that temporary structures had been illegally occupying pathways, blocking ventilation and creating serious safety hazards. In the event of an emergency, fire force vehicles would not even be able to enter the area. The Corporation has also put an end to the unauthorized money collection that was rampant in the market.
Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee Chairman are leading the inspection efforts, and further action against remaining illegal constructions will continue after examining additional records. The public has responded positively to the Mayor’s decisive action, with many comments on his social media post appreciating the move and suggesting further improvements including proper signboards for the multi-level parking facility and better regulation of roadside chicken stalls for public health.
